I haven't finished this yet but I LOVE Dorothy Sayers as a writer and believe that what she says in this book is incredibly wise. As a former teacher I spent years with wonderful children in grades K-12, mostly in urban schools. Her insights about how and what children should be taught at different stages of their lives are tremendous; how heartbreaking for students and for their teachers that her approach is so insanely out of fashion. It would be a wonderful thing to have independent schools implement her ideas (which, as she points out, are drawn from the wisdom of the ages vs. the "wisdom" of the moment).I highly, highly recommend this book to ...everyone with an open mind who seeks to educate children effectively and deeply by tailoring their instruction to the children's actual developmental level. A must-read for home schoolers in particular.

There are some editing issues that I encountered in the first chapter of "The Mind of the Maker." Minor mistakes don't bother me but there were misspellings of words and a number of words where a letter was replaced by a a parenthesis, the wrong letter, a dash, etc. I don't have much to say about Sayers' work, but I thought this would be worth noting for anyone thinking about buying.
These are two fundamental texts, the first a booklet on education that was quite influent in both Christian schools and specially homeschooling, the other immensely popular among Christian artists, specially writers. Too bad the edition is quite the worse I have ever seem, like it was typewritten by a dyslexic. Double hyphen-minuses instead of each dash, spaces after hyphens, garbage characters instead of punctuation, it was the shoddiest edition I have ever seen.
This version of Sayers's essay is badly transcribed and has errors throughout.
Sayers is always a good read and makes one think.The Lost Tools Of Learning, has much we can glean from to fix or current educational system.The Mind Of The Maker is awe inspiring and makes a person want to live up to the calling we each have been uniquely given.
This is a great book (that I've read before) but a terrible edition, full of errors. It is so bad, I don't trust it as to its authentisity. I'd like to return it and get another edition. Don
